Pay as You Clay
What is it?
A small, informal pottery group for adults who meet regularly at Bourn Pottery Studio. The group is a supportive group of people who are interested in working with clay, but can't necessarily commit to the schedule or expense of regular evening classes, or for those who don't have suitable space or facilities at home. Sara will, of course, offer advice, technical support and (hopefully) lots of inspiration - but the group is fundamentally not tutor-led. The group is suitable for those with some pottery experience (but you don't have to be an expert!). Members will be able to work on their projects at their own pace. If you are an absolute beginner, you may like to try the 6-week Beginner's Pottery for Adults course before embarking on your Pay as you Clay journey.
Where and when is it?
There are three groups that meet at Bourn Pottery Studio each week on Monday and Wednesday 10.00-12.00 or Wednesday from 7.30-9.30pm (usually in term-time).
How does it work?
Members purchase a "Pay as You Clay" card which entitles you to 6x2 hour studio sessions on either a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (whichever session you sign up for). You can then use these sessions at a time that suits you. You can spread out the sessions and come when you are available and when it fits in with your busy life - you don't need to commit to 6 sessions in a row and the cards are valid for 1 year. Let Sara know each week if you are intending to come. We mark off a session on your card each time you visit - so we all keep track of where we are. When you have used all the sessions, you buy a new card. Easy!
Members have access to all the studio facilities including tools, equipment and electric wheel. Also included is moderate use of glazes (approximately 8-10 medium pieces or equivalent), 1/4 kiln of bisque firing and 1/2 kiln of glaze firing. In essence, this should cover most of what you could make in 12 hours - but if you are making a 12 setting dinner service for example - we will have to negotiate an additional cost contribution!
How much does it cost?
A "Pay as you Clay" card costs £80.00 (including everything above and as much tea as you can drink!)
What about clay?
Clay is purchased separately in 12.5kg bags through the studio. You can then either take your bag home, or store it at the studio in between visits. You can choose from Stoneware (£10.00), Earthenware (£15.00) or Crank (£15.00) depending on what you are wishing to make (Sara can help you decide if you are not sure).
These are the house clays that are used by default. They are used for consistency in the kiln (to ensure predictable firing) and to protect the work of others. Other clay can be used by negotiation.
This all sounds great! How do I sign up?
