Ceramic Design Academy
The course:
A series of 4-part online immersive ceramic design masterclasses held in conjunction with Bourn Pottery. These courses are aimed at students with some pottery experience who are looking for inspiration, a regular time in the week to work in clay, and to improve their design skills. Each part includes a set of high quality, bespoke pdf notes (which contain lots of ideas and techniques based on contemporary ceramics, detailed notes about glazes and slips) plus 4, weekly, 2-hour zoom sessions on Tuesday nights.
We start each session with a brief demonstration and then we can all work together on our projects, giving you the opportunity to ask questions, discuss the course notes and interact with each other. The aim is to get us as close as possible to the experience of a face to face class and to kick start a creative community that can go much further than the class itself. Each course will have a 2-3 week break in between to give everyone the opportunity to get their work fired before the next course starts.
What is included in the course:
4 sets of pdf notes, 4 zoom sessions (Tuesday nights 19:00-21:00 UK time, please note the sessions will be split into two halves to facilitate the recordings: 19:00 to 19:50, 20:00 to 21;00), recordings of the zoom sessions (available for 12 weeks from the commencement of the course).
What is not included in the course:
All materials, tools and firing. This course is set up in conjunction with Bourn Pottery (contact them at www.bournpottery.co.uk) and you will need to register with them separately to fire your work. Bourn pottery can also supply clay giving you the opportunity to pick up your supplies as you drop off work for firing. Alternatively, you may have your own kiln, or you may live in a different part of the world and will have a pottery locally that can supply you with clay and fire your work for you.
Your tutor:
Debora Cane is an enthusiastic art tutor with over 35 years’ experience. Following a brief pottery apprenticeship with Chris Soule, she studied ceramics at Medway College of Design in the 1980s and set up her own ceramics studio which she ran in Cambridge for many years. A majority of her creative work is now done in pen & ink but she remains hugely enthusiastic about her ceramics and teaching ceramic design.
